The Society runs a training programme in hypnosis and its application to medical, psychological, and dental therapies for registered professionals eligible for membership of ASH.

Contact your State Branch for infromation about training available to you.

Applying for Membership of the Society

Applications for associate status with the Society are invited from registere medical practitioners, psychologists, and dentists. Membership is restricted to these disciplines. Complete the Membership Application Form and forward it to the Secretary of the ASH Branch in your state. Application Forms should not be forwarded to the Federal Office, as membership is a state branch matter.

Subscription Rates

The subscription for associate status for any financial year is $143 (including $13 GST). New members joining between 1 January and 30 June each year pay $71.50 (including $6.50 GST).

For SA associates and members the rate is $154 (ASH $140; GST $14).

Examination Process

To maintain the integrity of the Society, to ensure that members are qualified to practise hypnosis as part of their therapeutic armamentarium, and to ensure that members of the public receive the most appropriate treatment modalities, all associates of the Society who wish to become Full Members must successfully complete the Society's examination process.

Only Full Members of the Society can have their names entered on Branch referral lists.

Two examination rounds annually. Upon completion of the full examination process, associates are awarded the Society’s Diploma in Clinical Hypnosis and Full Membership of ASH.

Forthcoming Examination Details

Associates who have yet to proceed to the examination process need to be aware of examination requirements before submitting their application. Remember the following points:

- At least 30 hours attendance at Basic and Advanced Training Courses.
- 50 hours supervised training in the actual application of hypnosis with patients or clients.
- Current registration with the your professional body.
- You must have used hypnosis in the treatment of at least 10 patients or clients.

Each examination process has three components:

- Presentation of two case histories in which the candidate has used hypnosis.
- Three-hour written examination covering the theory and practice of hypnosis.
- 30-minute viva examination, covering clinical applications of hypnosis.

Each phase of the examination is a hurdle for the next phase -- you may only proceed to the written examination when cases have been assessed as satisfactory.

There are two examination processes each year.

Examination rounds commence with the presentation of case histories. These are due at the Board Office in Melbourne no later than the last Friday of May or October each year. Written examinations are held on the first Saturday of July or December each year. Vivas follow approximately three months after the successful completion of the written examination.

Associates entering an examination process must remember the following points:

- Read the Syllabus for Education and Examination Regulations (2001) booklet. This gives full details fo the examination regulations and the full procedure. Copies of the booklet can be obtained from Branch Secretary or the Secretary to the Board of Education.
- Complete the Application for Examinations form, found in the back of the Syllabus for Education and Examination Regulations booklet.

Make sure the form is fully completed, with full details of your coursework and supervision. Supervisors MUST sign the form. It is the responsibility of the candidate to keep accurate records of all workshops attended and supervisory hours.

Include with the application, two copies of each case history. One is marked in the candidate's home State and the other goes elsewhere. DO NOT bind case histories; simply staple the sheets of A4 paper, without hard covers.

CANDIDATES ARE NOT TO PUT THEIR NAME ON ANY PAGE OF THE CASE HISTORIES, OTHER THAN ON A COVER SHEET, WHICH GIVES NAME, SIGNATURE AND THE TITLE OF THE CASE.

- Include a copy of current professional registration.
- Enclose a cheque for $165 ($150 + $15 GST), payable to ASH Board of Education.
- Enclose a statement from Supervisors attesting to the fact that the candidate has used hypnosis in the treatment of at least 10 patients/clients. It is not necessary to enclose details of these cases.
- The candidate is asked to enclose current mailing address, and work/home telephone numbers, as it is often necessary to contact candidates urgently. Having this information on hand helps us enormously.
- Send all documentation to the Secretary, Board of Education, Australian Society of Hypnosis, PO Box 5114, Alphington, Victoria, 3078.

After candidates have submitted documentation, the procedure is as follows:

- An acknowledgment letter is issued. If any required documentation is outstanding, this letter will indicate what the candidate must provide. The letter will remind the candidate of the written examination date.
- Two examiners mark cases. We do not receive their decisions until immediately prior to the written exam, so candidates should NOT contact the Board Office by telephone. Candidates will be advised of their results IN WRITING in the week prior to the written exam.
- Candidates are informed of written exam results approximately two months after the actual exam date. Again, candidates are asked NOT to request prior information.
- Candidates are given as much advance notice as possible regarding the viva examinations, but these are scheduled at short notice.

Adherence to these procedures will facilitate processing of the examination procedure and help ensure no unnecessary delays. We know the exam can be stressful and we do what we can to help the process run smoothly and efficiently - we need the help of candidates in achieving that also.

REMEMBER THAT THE EXAMINATION PROCESS IS DESIGNED TO CONFIRM THAT EACH FULL MEMBER OF THE SOCIETY IS APPROVED BY THE SOCIETY TO PRACTISE HYPNOSIS, WITHIN THEIR OWN AREA OF CLINICAL EXPERTISE. MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC ARE REFERRED ONLY TO FULL MEMBERS OF THE SOCIETY AND THOSE ON REFERRAL LISTS ARE ASKED TO FULLY INDICATE THEIR AREA OF EXPERTISE AND MUST STAY WITHIN THIS AREA OF EXPERTISE.
